An American man has been sentenced to 28 years in jail after pleading guilty to killing his former girlfriend and putting her body in his freezer.

Luis Otero was arrested in 2010 after going to a police station and confessing to putting a body in his freezer, the Huffington Post reported.

He had been free on a $2 million bond, but last Friday pleaded no contest to the murder charge.

Madeline Brisson had warned family and friends that Otero had threatened her life, the Post reported, telling her sisters, "If I ever come up missing, look in the freezer".

When police went to the house after Otero's confession they found Ms Brisson's body frozen solid, indicating that it had been in the freezer for a few days.

Huffington Post reported that Otero's arrest warrant indicated Otero had "flipped out" because Brisson had asked him to move out and implied she was going to become the lesbian lover of his daughter, who is mentally challenged.
