A 28-year old employee of an American fast food restaurant has been arrested after allegedly reaching across a drive-thru window to stab a customer who complained about his order.

The unnamed customer of Del Taco, in Southern California, complained about a botched order to Gabriel Villalba around 2am.

It is alleged the confrontation escalated to the point where Villalba reached through the window and stabbed the customer in the stomach with a knife.

The victim is in a serious condition after being driven to the hospital by friends. His injury is not considered fatal.

Villalba is being held on $25,000 bail after being arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon.

The restaurant has declined to comment.
