A British woman who went to the cemetery to mark the second anniversary of her mother's death was horrified to find workers burying another person in her grave.

Carole Stone told Britain's Daily Mail newspaper that she had to stop a funeral with a hearse just metres from her mother's plot after finding people gathered around the graveside.

Cemetery workers in Bristol had dug a shallow grave where her mother was already buried and had thrown aside items including a cross and a potted plant.

Ms Stone told The Daily Mail: "I am absolutely devastated. If I hadn't visited at that specific time another person would have been buried in the same plot as my mum.

"My dad has always wanted to be buried there and we had hoped the spot would be saved for him."

Cemetery officials admitted the mistake, saying the funeral should have taken place at a plot three spaces away.

Ms Stone said the mistake has forced her to go through the trauma of her mother's death again.
