Music and children are a fun combination and more and more families are realising the benefits.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics has found that more than 20 per cent of WA children play an instrument outside school, up from 17 per cent in 2001.

North Fremantle community arts development co-ordinator and music teacher Claire Coleman said the rise reflected the growing understanding of the artistic and educational benefits of learning to play an instrument.

She said the figures also highlighted the shift away from learning music as something only for the elite.

"You don't have to be the smartest or the brightest - it should be enjoyed by everyone," Ms Coleman, who oversees the children's string ensemble String Beans and learning group Bean Sprouts, said.

Ensemble member Lani Heyward, 9, said she loved performing with her friends.

"I've been playing violin for 2½ years and I practise every day," she said. "I really like the sound it makes."
