Serco awarded prison services contract

GARETH PARKER, The West Australian June 16, 2011, 4:13 pm

The State Government has signed a five year contract for the prisoner transport and custodial services with global outsourcing giant Serco.

The move was widely expected after Serco was awarded preferred tender status last month.

Serco, which is also in line to provide a raft of backroom services at the new Fiona Stanley Hospital, takes over the custodial services contract from incumbent G4S, which presided over the tragic death of Aboriginal elder Mr Ward, who died in the back of an unairconditioned prison van.

Corrective Services Minister Terry Redman said the new contract would deliver improved service with a focus on duty of care and safety.

The contract has two options that could extend its duration to 10 years.
