David Free has difficulty confronting his past. Years of sexual abuse by a relative was a dark secret hidden for decades.
By blocking out the abuse he was able to keep the trauma at bay, but at the age of 29 the memories got too much.
He had a complete breakdown, which led to the loss of his job as a university lecturer, as well as his flat and his friends.
The Salvation Army helped Mr Free with emotional support and housing.
Each year the Salvation Army helps 100,000 people in WA.
By late yesterday, the Salvos Red Shield Doorknock Appeal looked set to collect up to $400,000. But additional funds are urgently required.
In response, _The West Australian _is today launching its annual Winter Appeal to assist the work of the Salvos. Donations of money, food, blankets and furniture are urgently required.Sponsored links
