EPA coal mine decision imminent

GEORGIA LONEY, The West Australian March 18, 2011, 12:40 pm

State's environmental watchdog will rule on Monday on the level of assessment to be placed on a proposal to mine coal near the centre of WA's premier wine and food region.

The Environmental Protection Agency said a short time ago it would announce its decision just after 11am on Monday, regarding the Vasse Coal Project.

Miners LD Operations announced plans to mine black coal near the centre of Margaret River last year, sparking vocal opposition from residents.

Opponents want the EPA to rule out the mine and are lobbying for legislation to protect the area from mining.
