Perth gets liveability approval

Health care and education are among Perth's strong points, according to a survey that ranks Perth as the eighth most livable city in the world.

Vancouver in Canada again won the top gong, followed by Melbourne, while Sydney came in seventh.

The survey by the Economist Intelligence Unit, which compared 140 cities, based the findings on five categories: stability, health care, culture and environment, education and infrastructure.

"What the survey does tell people is we are doing a lot of things right and as we continue to create precincts such as the Waterfront and the Northbridge Link, we are hopefully going to remain in a high position for many years," Lord Mayor Lisa Scaffidi said.

Future Perth chairman Sean Morrison agreed, saying the new State Theatre Centre made Perth more livable.

"The Government is investing unprecedented amounts of money into urban regeneration projects . . . and major social projects such as the Fiona Stanley Hospital," he said.

Mr Morrison encouraged the State Government to dig deep for a new WA museum and bigger art gallery. He said it also needed to ensure rapid growth did not mean unreasonable congestion.

I guess we got it better than south africa - but i would say its a close match - i would have thought the fact u cant walk the streets or ride the train safely at night without risk of being accousted by some original dero - would have put a big dent in the results - but hey - why add the nasty bits - what idiots

We finished behind Melbourne and Sydney, both of which would be lousy places to live.
