WA News / Bill Hatto © Kim Hames said recruiting for the positions, which would cost the Government $1 million in the first year, would start immediately.

The State Government has announced today it would be appointing a physician and a paediatrician to work in the Kimberley following calls from the community for the services.

Health Minister Kim Hames said recruiting for the positions, which would cost the Government $1 million in the first year, would start immediately.

He was hoping to fill the positions within the next few months.

Both would be based in Broome but would be expected to work throughout the region.

Dr Hames said the decision followed a review of health services in the Kimberley by the WA Country Health Service, which included an independent assessment by a leading paediatrician and consultation with Aboriginal medical services.

"Our review shows these two new specialists will support the health services that already exist in the Kimberley," he said.

"This new paediatrician will mean additional specialist support is available for children with serious health needs."

Dr Hames said the physician would also have a primary role at the Broome Hospital.

Local member Ken Baston welcomed the appointments, saying the community had been crying out for the specialists for a while now.

Mr Baston said it would relieve pressure on the Royal Flying Doctor Service as well as on doctors already up there.
