Union wamts phone policy review amid brawl footage

State School Teachers Union president Anne Gisborne has called for a closer look at policies regarding mobile phone use at schools after vision of a wild brawl at a State high school appeared on Youtube.

Speaking on 6PR this morning, Ms Gisborne said brawls such as the one that occurred at Churchlands Senior High School needed to be dealt with at school level.

She refused to call for a ban on mobile phones at schools, saying only that a closer look at school policy needed to be taken. She said that schools needed to set clear guidelines and consequences for mobile use.

She said in recent times there has been a spate of school yard brawls, adding that processes to deal with such brawls needed to be looked at so that they do not occur.

Sixteen students were suspended from the school following the brawl which was recorded on mobile phone.

Churchlands principal Neil Hunt said students were not allowed to use mobile phones during school hours and anyone caught doing so has the phone confiscated and later returned.
