Three burned after cigarette causes Northam explosion

A group of three people severely burnt after their car exploded into flames in Northam on Saturday night were sniffing butane gas prior to the inferno, police say.

Det-Sen. Const. Lesley Berecz said police seized six bottles of aerosol deodorant cans from the charred green Holden Commodore.

A 21-year-old man and a woman and man, both 17, were sitting in a car parked at Bernard Park on Minson Avenue in Northam when it burst into flames after one of the group lit a cigarette about 9pm.

The group are in Royal Perth Hospital with burns to their faces and arms.
