A Beaconsfield unit was damaged by fire early this morning.

At about 5.30am fire broke out at a Doig Place property.

A man in his fifties was believed to be inside the house when the fire began, but he was not injured.

Neighbour Lyn Reichard called emergency services when a friend alerted her to the incident.

"A friend driving past woke me up and said she saw smoke coming out of the man's place, so I went over there and he was outside walking around," she said.

"I rang 000. Before the firefighters got her we saw sparks and a window smash. When the firefighters arrived they smashed the window even more to get the water in."

Ms Reichard and her daughter Jenna first saw smoke, then flames billowing out of the building.

It took about eight firefighters about half an hour to fully extinguish the blaze.

Saint John Ambulance attended as a precaution but did not transport anyone. The occupant was relocated to another address.

A Department of Emergency Services spokesman said the extent of the damage was unknown at this stage, as well as the cause of the blaze.
