Freo bridge closure extended

Freo bridge closure extended

Peak hour traffic chaos is likely to continue with the Fremantle Rail Bridge remaining closed for another week.

A cargo ship broke its moorings and struck the bridge during a storm on Sunday night.

Initially it was estimated that the line was going to be closed for a week, but the bridge will remain closed until at least September 1.

“Engineers have spent the week assessing the damage to the track and structure and we now know that there is no major structural damage,” Transperth spokesman David Hynes said.

“However, one of the piers sustained some damage which must be repaired.

“In addition, an overhead power structure has been damaged and will need to be fixed.

“Our teams will continue to work round the clock with the aim of getting urban services back by September 1.”

The disruption means trains between Fremantle and North Fremantle will not be running.

But services are still running in both directions between Perth and North Fremantle and replacement buses are operating between North Fremantle and Fremantle Station.

Commuters a reminded that surfboards and bicycles are not permitted on Transperth buses, including replacement buses.
