'He just wanted a hug and now he's dead'
The family of a 32-year-old man who died in hospital a day after he was allegedly shoved outside a city nightclub say they believe all he wanted was a hug.
“I can see him now with a goofy look on his face, half cut, arms outstretched saying ‘give us a hug’.” Mr Harvey said.
Moments later, 32-year-old Zak was unconscious on the footpath.
His unwanted advance was allegedly met with a shove that caused him to stumble backwards and crack his skull on the footpath.
It was 5am on Sunday morning. By Monday afternoon his life support had been turned off.
“I just get stuck on the fact that Zak went to give somebody a hug and now he is dead,” Mr Harvey said.
“I just can’t understand it. People should know it is just so simple to kill somebody.”
Speaking from his home in Ardross yesterday, a devastated Mr Harvey described his son as a “nice bloke” who loved to travel and had friends around the world.
Mr Harvey also said he felt very sorry for the man charged with causing his son grievous bodily harm.
“He’s going to go through hell,” he said. “It is just sad, there is no good comes out of it on any side.”
Mr Harvey said his family was overwhelmed by the response from Zak’s friends and had gained some comfort from knowing some of his organs had gone to help others.
The 26-year-old will face court next month.
