Federal Agriculture Minister Barnaby Joyce has opened the door to winding back animal cruelty laws put in place after Labor's live cattle ban to Indonesia.

Mr Joyce's flagged review of the live export regime comes as Tony Abbott makes his first visit to Jakarta as Prime Minister, pledging to reinvigorate Australia's trade relationship with Indonesia.

Mr Joyce confirmed the so-called exporter supply chain assurance system introduced after the 2011 live trade ban would be subject to the Government's crackdown on regulatory red tape.

He said he was keen to ensure animal welfare standards were maintained, but questioned whether the current process for certification of approved foreign abattoirs could be streamlined.
