Juveniles return to Banksia Hill

Juveniles started being shifted back to Banksia Hill detention centre yesterday, almost eight months after a riot forced their transfer to a men's prison.

The Department of Corrective Services transferred 24 juveniles to the detention centre and expects the rest will be returned to the facility within a few weeks.

More than 100 cells were damaged by about 60 juveniles in the January 20 riot, which left a repair bill of $3.23 million.

Acting Corrective Services Commissioner Heather Harker said cells had been upgraded, more fences installed and a reform team was updating rules, procedures and plans.

Extra youth custodial officers started training this week.
