Pintxos puts bite into Wolf Lane variety
Perth's small bar scene will get a whole lot bigger when Wolf Lane welcomes a new venue with a focus on bite-size food this week.
The time was right to introduce Perth to the informal pintxos bars renowned in northern Spain's Basque Country, co- owner David Heaton said.
Bar de Halcyon, the city's first dedicated pintxos (pronounced pinchos) bar, will give diners an opportunity to feast on freshly prepared dishes featuring mainly WA produce and some key ingredients from Spain.
The pintxos dishes cost from $2 and are held together by cocktail skewers that are then counted at the end of the meal.
Mr Heaton said Halcyon would focus on high-quality, quick and affordable food - "it's fine dining come fast food" - combined with local and international wines, craft beers and cocktails.
"It's about value for money, whether it's breakfast, lunch or dinner," he said. "You can get a decent lunch for about $15, or breakfast with a cup of coffee for less than $10."
Wolf Lane was a perfect location because of its rustic appeal and the cluster of neighbouring small bars, which would work as a support network, he said.
Mr Heaton said the economic climate was not a deterrent for opening a bar because the "location and concept is a buffer to any downturn in the industry".
