A person has died after the stolen car they were driving hit a tree and burst into flames in Darlington this morning.

Police spokeswoman Ros Weatherall said the Toyota Prado hit a tree on Great Eastern Highway, near Burton Road, about 1am.

The Prado was reported stolen from Midvale earlier last night.

"The car has completely caught on fire," Ms Weatherall said.

"We believe there was one person in the car, identity is unknown."
