A man was left for dead on a street in Northbridge last night in an apparent hit and run.

A white Toyota ute struck a pedestrian on Newcastle Street near the intersection of Beaufort Street about 11pm.

A passing motorist, who witnessed the incident, told police they followed the ute after it took off down the road without stopping to check on the pedestrian.

The 39-year-old man was found badly injured lying on the road about 25 metres east of the intersection by police.

He was taken to Royal Perth Hospital. He is a serious but stable condition.

Police this morning took a person believed to be the driver in for questioning over the incident, police spokesman Neil Stanbury said.

Any witnesses or anyone with any information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
