A driver caused $200,000 damage after crashing their car into a road roller in an area cordoned off for night roadworks on Kwinana Freeway overnight.
Main Roads WA contractors had closed the inside and middle lanes of the northbound side of the freeway near Berrigan Drive to resurface the off ramp when the incident happened about 1am.
The roller was compacting the road surface when the white Holden station wagon drove through the cones closing off the area.
Workmen tried to stop the car but it accelerated up the off ramp and collided with the roller, which was travelling in the opposite direction.
The collision caused significant damage to the car.
The station wagon fishtailed up the road and eventually came to a stop on a verge on the left of the road.
The driver climbed out the car's passenger door and fled. The contractors told police had the car not collided with the roller it would have likely continued up the ramp and run down up to 10 workmen who were working there.
