Shark in desal plant

Georgia Loney, The West Australian Updated August 9, 2012, 3:14 am

A big wobbegong shark has to still call the Binningup desalination plant home after again avoiding capture.

The Water Corporation said it had sought advice from shark experts at the CSIRO and tried to catch the shark twice but had since given up.

South West Regional Manager Scott Moorhead said the shark probably entered the plant through a pipeline during construction before a screen was placed across the pipe.

"Initial attempts to safely catch and release the shark were not successful," he said.

"A follow-up attempt some months later during planned maintenance had the same result.

"A decision has been made not to continue these efforts."

Mr Moorehead said the shark had not been seen for months.
