Authorities have intercepted a boat carrying about 160 suspected asylum seekers off the WA coast.

HMAS Broome supported by HMAS Glenelg, operating under the control of Border Protection Command, intercepted a boat that requested assistance north of Christmas Island this morning.

HMAS Broome provided help to the boat following a request from the Australian Maritime Safety Authority.

Border Protection Command will transfer the passengers to Christmas Island where they will undergo initial security, health and identity checks.
