A fuel tanker rolled over and caught fire on the Great Southern Highway near Katanning this morning.

The tanker caught fire just before 7am on the Great Southern Highway near Clinic Road in Broomehill West.

A police spokeswoman said the accident happened about five to 10km south of Katanning.

The driver was not hurt and is not trapped. The fire is now under control.

Drivers have been advised to expect delays.

Members of the public, especially those with any respiratory conditions are advised to close their windows and doors until the smoke clears.

The smoke is currently drifting towards Katanning but if the wind changes it could affect people living in Broome Hill, and Woodanilling.
