Tests will be carried out to determine whether a set of lungs found on a footpath belonged to a human.
A woman made the grisly discovery while walking in Los Angeles on Sunday afternoon, according to a report by CBS in the United States.
The woman took a photo of the organs before contacting the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, said Lt Jack DeMello of the sheriff's Century Station.
According to reports, the woman was the only person to contact authorities about the lungs.
"It was right there on the sidewalk at the start of a driveway," Lt DeMello said.
"You'd think someone would see someone throw it out there."
The coroner and crime laboratory attended the site to collect the lungs and other evidence, Lt DeMello said."Blood and tissue samples will be used to determine if the lungs are human or animal," CBS reported.
