Soccer cat becomes an internet hit

A cat that invaded an English Premier League pitch has become an overnight Twitter sensation.

Within minutes of the grey and white cat's trot onto the pitch at Anfield on Monday night, it became an internet sensation with at least two spoof Twitter accounts quickly set up claiming to be the Premier League's newest star.

AnfieldCat, which claims to be the "official twitter of me, the Anfield Cat", has attracted almost 19,000 followers.

Meanwhile liverpoolfccat, who says they are the "first, the original Kop Cat", has more than 4,000 fans.

The real feline star sauntered on to the pitch around 11 minutes into Monday night's game causing amusement for players and supporters.

It enjoyed a sprint around the ground before being scooped up by a steward.

The cat's owner has not yet been identified.

Liverpool FC said the cat bore an uncanny resemblance to Moglet, an abandoned cat who shot to fame as the club's unofficial mascot in the eighties.

Moglet was adopted by the club's ground staff after being left outside the Anfield gates.

He was considered a lucky omen by the players and staff at Anfield.
