Legendary British songwriter and producer Mike Stock has weighed into the debate on pop culture's role in the sexualisation of children, saying 99 per cent of the music charts was peddling soft porn to youngsters.
Stock helped catapult Kylie Minogue to international stardom in the 1980s with pop factory Stock, Aitken and Waterman. He said stars such as Miley Cyrus and Lady Gaga were forcing children to grow up too soon.
"It's not about me being old-fashioned," he said. "It's about keeping values that are important in the modern world. Ninety-nine per cent of the charts is R'n'B and 99 per cent of that is soft pornography."
Just over two decades ago teens were dancing to Minogue's hit I Should be so Lucky, singing lyrics about falling in love.
Today parents, educators and psychologists are concerned that children as young as four are emulating stars such as Lady Gaga and Christina Aguilera, whose songs, videos and shows contain explicit lyrics and raunchy dance moves.
Author Dannielle Miller runs self-esteem workshops for girls, and agrees many music videos are "soft porn".
"We know this is having an impact on young girls. The schools I visit say a lot of the sexual behaviour you used to see in young women around the age of 13 is now starting to emerge so much younger."Sponsored links

ReplyYep - well we all knew that - go back to Elvis (gasp) it's like everything today - so much more in your face. And it's all about the timing now - early am for the little kids - quite frightening actually
