Girl smothered by 'religious fanatic' mother

A six-week-old girl in the UK has died after her mother stuffed pages from a Bible into her mouth and sat on her.

The girl was being monitored by social workers prior to being smothered by her mentally-ill mother, the Daily Mail reports.

Julia Lovemore, 41, was detained indefinitely under the mental health act after admitting the manslaughter of her child on the grounds of diminished responsibility.

A court was told Mrs Lovemore was a religious fanatic who had been in a state of psychosis at the time of the killing.

Two social workers had visited her home the same day the child was smothered and expressed concerns over the mental state of her 39-year-old husband, David.

They left for fear of agitating Mr Lovemore who later turned up at his local GP's surgery carrying his child's lifeless body.

The child's older sister was unharmed.

When a social worker and a psychiatric nurse visited Mr Lovemore last year they found him praying loudly and shouting 'Take the devil out of Julia'.

Mrs Lovemore had suffered at least three psychotic episodes since being diagnosed with bi-polar effective disorder in 1995.

In a statement given to police, Mrs Lovemore recalled her memories of the incident.

She said: "I sat in my bedroom and I was ripping pages out of my Bible. I put some small bits of paper in Faith's mouth and she spat them out."

"For some reason I sat on her, I was crying. I was bouncing on the bed. I don't know why I was sitting on her. I got bi-polar."
