Rudd bid to break asylum deadlock

The Rudd Government has promised 78 Sri Lankans resettlement in Australia or another country within a year in a desperate bid to end the impasse on the Oceanic Viking, but the asylum seekers have rejected the offer.

It also flew leading refugee advocate Paris Aristotle to Indonesia to plead directly with the asylum seekers to get them to leave the vessel.

But the inducement of rapid processing and resettlement, and the presence of Mr Aristotle, the director of the Victorian Foundation for Survivors of Torture, did not work.

Revelations of the offer come as a top Indonesian diplomat said his government should reject Australia’s request for more time to resolve the Oceanic Viking asylum seeker impasse.

Sujatmiko, the Indonesian foreign ministry’s diplomatic security director, says the 78 Sri Lankan asylum seekers clearly cannot be persuaded to come ashore in Indonesia and his government should not extend the Oceanic Viking’s security clearance beyond Friday.

“The security clearance is expired tomorrow.

“I’m not sure whether there is any applications from the Australian government for the extensions.

“If we extend their stay here, in my personal view it is to prolong the suffering of the people.”

In a note thrown off the Oceanic Viking yesterday, the asylum seekers wrote: "You talked us if we back to Indonesia you can start our process very quickly in give us resettlement very quickly. We agree everything you talked about.

"But we are sorry to telling you we don't want to go back to Indonesia."

The note adds "this is our final decision" and says the asylum seekers will "close their life on the ocean" if they are forced off the boat.

A deadline for the Oceanic Viking to leave Indonesia expires today, though its permit to stay was likely to be renewed at the request of Australia, Foreign Ministry spokesman Teuku Faizasyah said.

The Sri Lankans have been aboard the Oceanic Viking for 20 days after being plucked from a sabotaged and unseaworthy wooden boat in Indonesian search and rescue waters by the Australian navy.

The stand-off is costing Australian taxpayers $75,000 a day and the Government is desperate to end the impasse before Kevin Rudd meets Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on the sidelines of APEC in Singapore next weekend.

The Prime Minister is continuing to insist that he has boundless patience in dealing with the affair, but it remains unclear how long Indonesia will play along with the waiting game.

There is deep resentment about extending the stay of the Australian Customs vessel.

Dr Sujatmiko, the senior official in Tanjung Pinang running a task force on the crisis, said it was "unwise" to extend the permit, which would "prolong the suffering" of the Sri Lankans and waste the resources of the Indonesian navy, which has a ship nearby monitoring the Oceanic Viking.

Dr Sujatmiko's comments were slapped down later by Jakarta.

Sources close to the negotiations said the deal involved resettlement within a year, a condition that also reflected the demands of the Indonesian Government.

"They will not be able to stay at Tanjung Pinang (detention centre) indefinitely and there has to be a clear time frame," Mr Faizasyah said.

"Over a year would be too much.

"Your Government is talking to other countries, other parties to the UN refugee convention to assist them (with resettlement)."

Meanwhile, the Maritime Union of Australia said it would attempt to pass $10,000 to the Sri Lankans in a show of solidarity when there was a changeover of Australian crew on the ship.

As well as 22 Customs officers on the ship, there are about 19 Australian merchantmen. The money was collected by the union from seafarers, miners and wharfies.

They are not even on our shore and they are already making demands. What will they demand when they are on our shore. A separate state perhaps !!. Put them back on the Oceanic Viking and sail them back to Sri Lanka. so much cheaper. Come on Mr Rudd show your colours and give the order.

I am not racist by any means but there are laws in place for immigration and these should be abided by. I believe any boats that are intercepted should be impounded and the people on them given the information they need to make application for acceptence into this country then put on the first plane back to their own country. Do this a few times and I guarantee they wont be paying for an illegal passage and the sharks taking their money may have to find another way of earning a living. The rest of the world must think we are a bunch of idiots for allowing this to continue...... For heavens sake wake up Australia so our children and grandchildren can enjoy a peaceful exsistence.

in my view i believe we should never think of throwing them to rotten down, for god protect us and we never have to see ourselves in their position, moreover they want to live so give to live them freely, increasing numbers are not only from srilanka, india or africa ,chinese , indonesian ,korean , taiwanes , leabnanese are increasing.. so rather criticizing we must stand now t owarn our government to prevent illegal people to come here. However australia is a rich resources country or god gifted so we need more labours or workers in any field to work for so we can live good life, with good environment. blame never the politicians but mistake is u rs whom u ve voted, did u actually think once before u voted .so its u guilty for fault ok. Ninja, sorry pup, but thats a lot of bum squib. England has a channel that you could spit across separating her from Europe, you call that isolated? Stop comparing us to England we are nothing alike, except for the wingers.

  8. Mikie 02:44pm Saturday 07th November 2009 WST Report Abuse

I agree- send them all back- and then they can apply to immigrate to another country. 75 K a day-..... next they will be demanding compensation for the 'stress' of being held on a boat. The World has gone crazy when terrorists can demand whatever they want. I don't think we would be given free housing, medical etc etc if we decided to go to another country in the hope that we would have a better life there. Wake up before it becomes a flood.

uggersillyb - open your eyes mate, England was isolated, it had water arround it, it stopped Hitler, but it didn't stop it getting over run, in only 4 generations. they breed 4 times faster than we do, we have kids that we can afford to look after, they have a kid every year, and WE pay for that, Taxpayers money, so they keep breeding, and Islam is set for world dominance, and it WILL happen.

  10. Sillyb 01:12pm Saturday 07th November 2009 WST Report Abuse

coey - sorry cobba but your barking up the wrong tree, indo fishermen are not the issue here Michael - your are simply barking mad. Mr Howard was responsible for bringing in a hell of a lot of Africans as well. He decided it was ok when we needed the workforce during the boom yearsWhat are you on about with your "80 % of Australians oppose multiculturalism " : where did you get that figure from? I appreciate your right to have a far right extremely bigoted and hateful opinion, but for Allahs sake please back up your rants with some checkable facts or evidence, not just from your sick mind. I dont mind the idea of sending unlawful immigrants back home, but keep it in perspective. We arent getting over run. We are extremely isolated and hard to get to. We will need to import a hell of a lot of people to cater for the next boom, because we dont have enough home growns to do the jobs. ergo our country is only going to become more multi cultural, so your nasty, self loathing psychopathic views are only going to create more problems. Please come back with some evidence to back up your claims.

Jeez, am I glad that I moved from where WE used to live, the area be now overloaded with these refugees both legal and illegal. Disease like TUBERCULOSIS and MEASLELS, which were eradicated in the 1960’s, are rife there now, not to mention HIV and AIDS. What ARE health checks for?

  12. coey 08:42am Saturday 07th November 2009 WST Report Abuse

Why not arm fishing boats? They will get rid of any poachers at little cost.

  13. coey 08:27am Saturday 07th November 2009 WST Report Abuse

$75 grand a day! Wish aged and disability pensioners got that. My simple solution is to use ALL Indonesian fishing boats as target practice for the RAN and RAAF. This equals NO MORE ILLEGAL FISHERMAN and so called REFUGEES. If any reach Australian waters and are caught on the ofshore islands, destroy their boats and let them starve.

  14. Michael 05:34am Saturday 07th November 2009 WST Report Abuse

My area alone has changed into something like out of Babylon in just two years since Labour came into power, now mostly Muslim, African and Indian, makes u feel you don't belong anymore and the more THEIR numbers increase, the more arrogant and aggressive they become, even their women. Any idiot knows that to bring one or more faster breeding more demanding racial groups will change Australia's laws, politics economy, sustainability levels, and social services forever. With over 80% of white Australians not wanting Multiculturalism, it was deliberately pushed onto the Australian public with massive immigration by the far left to permanently silence any opposition so they would reamin in power. This information has come from admission from the English Labour governement which has openly admitted to comitting racial genocide 'that got out of control' with high immigrant arrivals and their higher birthrates. WHY we are NOT allowed to discuss this coming Holocuast of our race in a sensible and calm manner is not understood as the far left go immediantly into meltdown with cries of racism and bigotry, even though they are comitting the biggest genocide in human history. But then again, the white far left through out history always have been the biggest cowards, doing anything to appease the enemy rather than fight, hoping the crocodile will eat him last. And as they are the ones who gave birth to that crocodile, they will never admitt it and will destroy all witnesses to it, us.

  15. Michael 05:17am Saturday 07th November 2009 WST Report Abuse

We all know they will end up here. If there wasn't an election coming and his polls hadn't been down, they would already be here. And it's not just he boat arrivals, look what he has bought into the country anyway. We are the lowest reproducing race in the world and he has delibertely bought in the most fastest reproducing races Muslims and Africans, they also get preference in cheap state housing and practice polygamy....so guess whose going to be running the country a a couple more generations? the white far left are just nasty, genocidal, self loathing psychopaths who have engineered their own race's Holocaust for their own private viewing.

Its easy, they are on a boat. Take them to Sri lanka. Those who have committed crimes in the name of Tamil independence will jump overboard. Problem solved. But what ever happens these criminals must not set foot in Australia, ever. These are not the refugees we want in Australia that is for sure.

  17. Leslie 03:30pm Friday 06th November 2009 WST Report Abuse

Skipper Les. I agree with ''Australian''whole heartedly and believe what sarahpattison says is true, they cannot return to their country which is in India, Tamil Nado I believe, because they joined the tigers and committed atrocities in Sri Lanka which included killing a President as i recall, some years ago .Why is Krudd refusing to take these undesirables straight to Sri Lanka in the O.V it would certainly stop any more from trying it on! and a cheaper solution than greasing the palms of our bent neighbours in Indoland.

  18. gatekeepertoday 01:19pm Friday 06th November 2009 WST Report Abuse

If Australia is bound by an agreement within the United Nations to take rescued asylum seekers to the nearest shore, and then the asylum seekers refuse to disembark, why isn’t the UN involved in physically contributing to an acceptable resolution?
