Fortescue Metals Group was forced to evacuate about 1500 workers from its Cloudbreak mine camp in the Pilbara overnight after a bushfire came perilously close to the mine's accommodation village.
It is understood workers at the iron ore mine site were woken late last night and told to evacuate the camp, about 170km north of Newman, with most being sent to the nearby Christmas Creek mine.
Fortescue said there were no injuries or significant damage.
The company said workers would return to the accommodation village when it was safe to do so.
“Personnel were evacuated to Fortescue’s Christmas Creek mine, 50km east of Cloudbreak, and will be returned to the accommodation village when it is safe to do so,” a spokeswoman said.
“There have been no injuries or significant damage and we are working to contain the fire.”The Shire of East Pilbara is coordinating the response to the blaze, which was caused by lightning earlier this week.
