Chemical spill closes Great Eastern Highway

A section of Great Eastern Highway is closed after a truck carrying ammonium nitrate rolled about 60km west of Coolgardie last night.

The incident happened on Great Eastern Highway near Pumping Station Road about 1.30am.

A police spokesman said the truck’s second trailer rolled, causing ammonium nitrate to spill onto the road.

“Due to the danger posed to the public the highway was closed in both directions,” he said.

The highway is expected to stay closed until this afternoon while specialist equipment is used to clear the road.

The driver of the truck was not injured.
