Two men are in hospital after they were attacked with a machete and bricks at a home in South Lake overnight.

Police were called to the address on Meadow Bank Terrace to respond to reports of people fighting in the street and breaking bottles about 8.50pm.

A police spokesman said a shot was fired into the ceiling of the home from a .22 rifle during the altercation.

He said some of the men had forced their way into the house by kicking a door open.

A 31-year-old Geraldton man received a laceration to his chest believed to have been caused by a machete.

He is expected to be released from Royal Perth Hospital this morning.

A 21-year-old man who lives at the South Lake address suffered wounds to his head and chest from bricks used in the attack.

He remains in hospital.

Police are searching for three men who were involved in the incident, all of whom are believed to be known to the victims.
