Hugs OK at school

A Bunbury school which had enforced a no- hugging rule has lifted the ban.

Adam Road Primary School made headlines around the country this month after Year 6 student Amber Ablett got detention for giving her friend a goodbye hug at the end of the school day.

Acting principal Gemma Preston said the school's board agreed on a "commonsense approach" when it met on Tuesday.

"The changes recognise that physical contact, such as hugging between students, is entirely appropriate in some situations and teachers will be able to make this judgment," she said.

However, students must avoid "inappropriate or excessive physical contact".
