Needy Salvos aim to raise $800,000

Bill Hatto/WA News © Siobhan Poupard, Ella Bracone and Sarah Clifford get ready to help with the Salvation Army Doorknock Appeal.

Expect a knock at the door from a stranger this weekend as up to 10,000 people take to the streets to raise money for WA's most needy.

The Salvation Army's Red Shield Doorknock Appeal starts today, with collectors out in force across the metropolitan area and in regional centres.

School students will join the army of volunteers who will visit about 60 per cent of households in Perth.

The aim is to raise more than $800,000 to fund the emergency relief work carried out by the Salvos in WA.

All donations, no matter how big or small, are welcome and receipts are available for those over $2.

Year 10 Mercedes College student Siobhan Poupard and about 35 of her classmates are among those taking part.

"It is nice to be part of a community and to give something back for all the privileges we have," Ms Poupard said.

Collectors will be easy to recognise by their official badges and Red Shield bags.
