With a father who is a police officer, it is only fitting that three-year-old Charlie will be one of the first to benefit from a new police charity to raise money for childhood cancer.

Police Commissioner Karl O'Callaghan is launching Bright Blue at an open day and concert tomorrow at the Police Academy in Joondalup.

Charlie, one of about 20 WA children diagnosed with brain tumours each year, has been treated for neuroblastoma since his diagnosis on New Year's Eve last year.

Brain tumours are the second most common cancer in childhood.

Charlie is having chemotherapy and will have surgery next month followed by radiation.

For the second year, Mr O'Callaghan will lead a group of motorcyclists on the Wall to Wall ride from Joondalup to Canberra to raise money for Bright Blue.

Last September, the ride raised $240,000. This year's ride is on September 10.

Money raised will buy a 3-D laser scanning microscope for the Telethon Institute for Child Health Research to complement a 3-D molecular imager bought from last year's ride.

The open day is from 4pm to 6.30pm followed by a concert and fireworks.
