Two years ago, the Bruce Rock bowls club was scratching around for a men's team. This year, 32 men have signed up and created two teams, enough for a competition.
"There are more blokes this year because of the dry," said shire president Stephen Strange. "But it's the women who deserve a lot of the recognition. Women have kept the bowls club alive."
After moving to combine a new astro-turf green with the tennis court, football oval and social club rooms, Bruce Rock has a hub of community activities for its sustainability and mental health.
"It takes their minds off the farm and it's good to just come and have a drink and connect with others," Ladies Bowling Club president Edna Vaughan said.
