Firies battle central city blaze

Police diverted traffic from Cathedral Ave yesterday as firefighters battled a bushfire near the John Willcock Link overpass.

Visibility was diminished by thick smoke from the fire, which burned an area of scrub that is also bordered by Durlacher St.

Volunteer bushfire brigades were called in to assist the career Geraldton Fire and Rescue Service in controlling the blaze, which is believed to have been caused by a stolen motor scooter that was dumped and set alight.

It follows a serious bushfire that threatened homes at Mt Tarcoola on Australia Day, which has prompted a “Street Meet” for residents tomorrow.

City of Greater Geraldton volunteer bushfire fighters and Bushfire Ready coordinators will attend the informal meeting.
