Crowds mark the sacrifice of soldiers

Kimberley residents wearing red poppies paid tribute to soldiers who died defending Australia at the local Remembrance Day service last Sunday.

Shire of Wyndham East Kimberley chief executive Gary Gaffney told the crowd that converged on the Kununurra cenotaph at 10.30am that the number of people attending the local memorial service was growing.

The service commenced with an introduction by Mr Gaffney, before a representative from the Australian Army Reserves Norforce unit described the events of World War I and the significance of Remembrance Day.

The last post was played before a minute’s silence at 11am, commemorating the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month when World War I officially ended in 1918.
