Residents ‘complacent’ about bushfire season

Firefighters and a small landholders group are concerned many people living in the Esperance urban rural zone appear to be complacent about preparing for the upcoming bushfire season.

Their concerns were raised at a community meeting organised by the Esperance Small Landholders Group at the Pink Lake Bushfire Brigade shed on Saturday.

Group secretary Trudy Giles said about 100 emails were sent out encouraging people to attend, with only about 15 people showing up.

“I am disappointed with the response and we also asked those people to send the emails onto people they knew, ” she told the Kalgoorlie Miner.

“It’s too late when the fire starts to start thinking about what they need to do.”
