More than 2000 people flip-flopped to Perth's iconic Cottesloe Beach today to set a world record at The Havaianas 2012 Australia Day Thong Challenge.

The event was run across the country but WA set the record after 2088 beachgoers lined up on board thong-shaped inflatable beds to create the longest line of floating thongs on the ocean.

WA beat North Bondi Beach by 712 people and Torquay in Victoria, which attracted 1236 people.

WA claims the record from NSW, where the previous mark of 2068 was set at North Bondi last year.

Now in its seventh year, the Havaianas Australia Day Thong Challenge involved more than 5200 people taking part nationally and raising $52,260 for the Nippers.

Cottesloe Nippers will receive $20,880 from the today's event.
