Young men watch over two hours of porn a week

Young men spend an average of more than two hours per week watching pornography online, while young women only spend 15 minutes, a survey has revealed.

The online poll of one thousand and fifty seven people, aged 18 to 24, by BBC Radio 1 also found that one in four men think that they’re watching too much porn online, with some heavy users admitting to watching over 10 hours a week.

According to the results, 24 per cent of light users and 61 per cent of heavy users admitted that pornography made them feel less interested in having sex with their partner.

“Those people spending large amounts of time accessing porn are not having more fun,” Dr Heather Wood from the Portman Clinic, told BBC Radio 1.

“They are more worried about themselves, more worried about what they are looking at, and report more relationship problems.”

The opinion poll showed that free websites are the most popular way of accessing pornographic material, followed by file-sharing networks, mobile phones, DVDs, magazines and TV.

"Anyone who pays for porn these days needs their head checking because there is so much free porn out there," 22-year-old Ian Barber, 22, told the programme.

Jason Dean, a counselor who runs a website for online sex addicts, told BBC Radio 1 that he used to speak mainly to middle-aged single guys, but that now he gets "more contact from women, teenagers and people in their 20s”.

The survey was conducted from March 18 to March 21, 2011.
