Pop diva Britney Spears kicked off the Australian leg of her Circus world tour at Burswood Dome last night, lip-syncing her way through nearly two hours of high camp in front of a sold-out audience of 17,000.

The fans could not have cared less that she was not singing live, screaming as the comeback queen minced through her hits accompanied on stage by 15 circus performers.

And it was the real Spears, not a decoy, strutting around amongst acrobats, clowns and latex-clad dancers in the middle of the Dome.

The 27-year-old mother-of-two's first ever Australian concert was visually spectacular but the sound was woeful - an ear-splitting bombardment that made objections to her miming a concern secondary to worries that your head might explode.

While the crowd of mostly young fans went wild for remixed versions of favourites such as Toxic, Slave 4 U and her 1998 debut single …Baby One More Time, the first half stuck to recent songs off 2007's Blackout and last year's comeback album, Circus.

The show veered close to soft-porn on several occasions, and Spears may have fallen out of one of her skimpy costumes during Toxic.

One can only assume that the combination of Spears' train-wreck off-stage life, epochal pop songs and the stadium-sized concert spectacular drove Circus to be the highest grossing international tour of 2009.

Frankly, it's not much chop - 16 songs not even sung by the star, with plenty of filler and Spears barely engaging with her fans. She may as well have sent the decoy out in a blonde wig.

Oh come on you guys, what is this? Let's hang Britney lynch mob? Every time I read about Britney, there you guys are... Enough already! Like some of you said, "people make their own choices to see her or not". Take a breather, go for a walk. It would make you less aggressive! Mr Collins... Can you be abit more positive than that?

Yea Tanja. Life is that simple to some people. Three types of people indeed! Is that something someone told you or did you figure it out for yourself? Take the other shoe off and count some more...

There's 3 types of people in the world: The achievers (Britney got highest grossing int show 09!) the dreamers... and the complainers. Which one do you belong to? Complain all you like, she's the one that's laughing.. all the way to the bank :)

highest grossing international tour of 2009. Good on 'ya Britney, yes, 'you did it again'. I didn't go to see your show, but I respect anyone who achieves that.

Pan Psuchopompos, you have missed my point, they said she was going to lip synch, if people went knowing this, they cant have been ripped off as they knew what they were getting upfront. You also seem to missed the point that it is those who DONT say they are lip synching that do the ripping off. I'm no britany fan, but at least she was honest

Why did singers stop becoming singers and become entertainers? I guess it was because they could never sing. If I bought a product that was falsely labelled I have legal recourse under the ACCC legislation to get my money back and the business would be heavily penalised. Performers pretending to perform should be no different and lets be honest about it - not many people knew until a few days before the concert that she would be lip-syncing. By then, they had parted with the dosh.

...Come on, idolising a pop star is a part of every childs life. Britney is hardly a media whore, are we forgetting how long she has been around? She was a child star herself who used to have talent before it all went to her head and turned her mental. Majority of her fans have been with her from the beginning and have the mentality to make decisions for themselves about her... me included. So I resent being called a turd rolled in sparkles thanks :)

What we actually love Karlee, is trying to knock some sense into mindless little sheep who latch onto media whores like Britney just because the media tell you it is "the buzz thing to do". But then, yea, why bother? The reporter (Simon Collins) said of Britney "you can't polish a turd, but you can roll it in sparkles" and I guess ti is true too of her fans.

Half of you couldnt care less for Britney and her tour so why are you even wasting your time posting. Leave it for the fans to discuss. Everyone just loves jumping on the tongue lashing band wagon when a celebrity gets bad publicity!

  19. John 10:53am Monday 09th November 2009 WST Report Abuse

All you Britney defenders, lets be honest for a moment. Describe her show as entertainment if you like but let's not insult those who have real talent by including 'singing' in Britney's skill set.

  20. Pan Psuchopompos 10:49am Monday 09th November 2009 WST Report Abuse

craigwb, also with your type of mentality, is it any wonder that people are getting ripoff by scammers such as Britney and her small gang of supporters
