Tiger shark caught from Floreat beach

UPDATE: 4PM A fisherman has told of how he caught a 1.5m tiger shark off the Floreat Groyne this morning.

City Beach’s Brendan Gow, of The Fishing Shop in Woodvale, was ballooning for Spanish mackerel off the groyne about 11am when he hooked the shark.

Mr Gow, who fishes at the groyne each week, said he and a friend had brought the shark up out of the water on the beach before releasing it.

He said the shark was only out of the water for a few minutes before it was set free.

“We were just trying to catch mackerel when the shark came along,” Mr Gow said.

“I was not surprised at all as sharks are fairly common in the area.

“It swam off quite powerfully.”

The beach was temporarily closed after the shark’s capture.

Swimmers in the area and Water Police were advised.

Meelup Beach was closed just before 4pm after a 2m hammerhead shark was seen swimming close to shore.
