Former captain Ricky Ponting is set to consider his future after he was dumped from Australia's one-day squad in the middle of the current tri-series against India and Sri Lanka.

Selectors chairman John Inverarity said Ponting had been axed after a shocking run in the five previous games, including yesterday's 110-run win over India at the Gabba, where he scored just seven.

Ponting, who has been acting captain in Michael Clarke’s absence, has scored 18 runs at an average of 3.6 in the tri-series.

"Ricky is going to consider his future in next couple of days and my guess is he'll give press conference in next couple of days," Inverarity told Fox Sports News.

"There's no place for sentiment. We're hoping Ricky will remain available for Test match cricket."

Inverarity said he broke the news to Ponting this morning and that the veteran "took it on the chin".

But Inverarity also added Ponting was considering his involvement at all levels of the game.

"Ricky is going to consider his future over the next couple of days and he’ll talk it over with his family and with his manager and my guess is he’ll be giving a press conference in the next two or three days," Inverarity said.

"He made a double century in his last Test match and we are hoping that he remains available for Test match cricket, but there can be no guarantees in elite sport and in the Australian cricket team.

"There are three Test matches in the West Indies, then as I understand it there are no more Test matches until October or November."

Clarke returns to the squad of 13 following a minor hamstring strain while star allrounder Watson has been included for the first time this season after overcoming hamstring and calf complaints which kept him out of the entire home Test season against New Zealand and India.

The selectors also said Matthew Wade was now the preferred one-day wicketkeeper, but added that he and Brad Haddin were both set to tour the West indies.

"The intention at this stage is to have both Matthew (Wade) and Brad Haddin in the West Indies together for the duration of the tour.”

Australia squad for the next two ODIs: M Clarke (c), S Watson (vc), D Christian, X Doherty, P Forrest, R Harris, B Hilfenhaus, D Husset, M Hussey, B Lee, C McKay, M Wade, D Warner.

Hey Ricky time to retire. You have been absolutey great for the game but it is time to relax and enjoy family life. There are plenty of youngsters who are waiting to step up to the plate.

Time to finish with the tests. They have been testing cricket for decades now and it obviously does not work. Stop wasting time.
