Labor’s Left faction powerbroker Dave Kelly will today announce his intention to run for the seat of Bassendean at the next State election.
The long-time secretary of United Voice – formerly the Liquor, Hospitality and Miscellaneous Workers Union – was touted as the likely candidate as soon as sitting MP Martin Whitely announced his retirement.
Mr Whitely revealed his plan in The West Australian in January, at the same time he called on then Labor leader Eric Ripper to stand down.
Several days later, Rockingham MP Mark McGowan was elected the party’s leader after gaining support from Mr Kelly and other Left faction leaders.
Mr Kelly is expected to win the seat of Bassendean – which Labor holds by a 10.3 per cent margin – comfortably at the election next March.Sponsored links

Please no!!!! I live in this area and am sick of being taken for granted. Everybody vote for somebody other than Labor. It's the only way to get some respect from either Liberal or Labor. Become a marginal seat and all of a sudden the infrastructure comes!!
ReplyThats what we need- another union ratbag with his nose in the parliamentary trough.
ReplyGreat!! .............. Another lazy Unionist who's never worked a day in his life, whose only objective is to stop business productivity now sneaking in through the back door of politics.
ReplyI thought the westminster system was designed to allow community leaders to be voted in by the people they represent, not Labor shifting another unionist inot their safe seat. Markv has a point! No wonder labor is losing votes to the greens.
ReplyLabor's installing Reece Whitby into the seat of Morley.... doesn't he live in Cott??. I'd be a little upset if I was a resident of Morley, where's my representation. All this shows is that Reece is representing himself, not the community he lives in.
