A young couple were violently attacked by two men over a cigarette after a party in Kardinya.

Police said the 20-year-old man and his girlfriend had been sitting on a footpath on North Lake Road in the early hours of Saturday, November 28.

The couple were approached by two men asking for cigarettes, when they were told there were no cigarettes they left. The two men collected wooden stakes from nearby bushes and returned to where the couple were sitting. The young man was struck across the head several times. His girlfriend was also hurt when she came to her friend's aid.

Paramedics and police were called to the scene, the victim suffering significant head injuries.

One of the men believed to have been involved in the incident is described as olive skinned, about 183cm tall, aged in his late teens, with medium-length sandy hair, an athletic build, wearing a collared shirt and dark jeans.
