Osama raid tweeter becomes web sensation

An IT consultant who moved to Abbottabad, Pakistan, has become a social media sensation after inadvertently tweeting about the operation in which Osama bin Laden was killed.

Sohaib Athar, who writes on the microblogging site Twitter under the name @ReallyVirtual, wanted a "break from the rat-race by hiding in the mountains with his laptop".

But now he has little chance of anonymity.

"Helicopter hovering above Abbottabad at 1AM (is a rare event)," he wrote last night.

"A huge window shaking bang here in Abbottabad Cantt. I hope it's not the start of something nasty . . .

"The few people online at this time of the night are saying one of the copters was not Pakistani"

Mr Athar said today he was at least 2km to 3km from the area where Osama bin Laden was found.

Following confirmation from US President Barack Obama that Osama bin Laden had been killed in a CIA operation, the story of Mr Athar's blogging spread like wildfire online, with his followers growing by the thousands within just a few hours.

"Uh oh, now I'm the guy who liveblogged the Osama raid without knowing it," he wrote today.
