JAYNE RICKARD, The West Australian February 28, 2010, 10:01 am

A 71-year-old pilot is in hospital with serious injuries after crashing his single engine Jabiru plane in a paddock near Serpentine Airport yesterday afternoon.

The pilot put out a mayday call just before 5pm citing possible engine failure before attempting to land the plane in a paddock off Hopeland Road.

The plane crashed and flipped onto its roof before the pilot managed to climb out and activate the emergency beacon.

Mundijong police attended the crash site.

The pilot was flown to Royal Perth Hospital with serious internal and spinal injuries.
