A 21-year-old man is fighting for his life in Royal Perth Hospital after his Holden Commodore slammed into a tree on Tonkin Highway this morning.

The man, who has reportedly lost both his legs, had to be cut free from the car after another driver found it wrapped around the tree about 1.20am.

Police are investigating whether excessive speed was a factor in the crash.
