Texas police officer on 'indefinite suspension' for giving homeless man a 'faecal sandwich'

A Texas police officer has been placed on "indefinite suspension" for allegedly giving a homeless person a "faecal sandwich" and bragging about it.

Five-year-veteran of the San Antonio Police Department Matthew Luckhurst was fired this week after it was revealed "he had picked up some feces [sic], placed it in a slice of bread, and put it in a Styrofoam container next to the unknown homeless male," a police press release stated.

The incident occurred in May and was reported to internal affairs for review in July, the San Antonio Express News reports.

The matter was revealed at a private session of the city's council this week.

When Luckhurst bragged about the act to another officer, he was told to go back and throw the sandwich away. He was not sure if Luckhurst did.

"This was a vile and disgusting act that violates our guiding principles of 'treating all with integrity, compassion, fairness and respect,'" Chief William McManus said in a statement.

The former officer did not comment on the matter but his lawyer told the newspaper Luckhurst never left the faecal sandwich next to the homeless man and it was a "joke" that spiralled out of control.

"It didn't happen," the lawyer said.

San Antonio mayor Ivy Taylor said Luckhurst's actions were a "betrayal of every value" the city held and that he did not represent the true good nature of the police force.

"Firing this officer was the right thing to do," he said.
