After the fun it's time to get fit in the city

This week we give you tips for shopping, working or living in the CBD — using images taken by people who do just that.

We've examined lunch and we’ll admit we didn’t exactly look under every stone to unearth healthy or vegetarian options.

In fact, with all the burgers, banh mis and steaks, Wednesday’s IC could result in more bovine fatalities than Britain’s mad cow disease epidemic.

And it’s not like tomorrow’s edition is going to be much better as we look at the best watering holes in the city for a TGIF drink or seven.

So, to make up for all the caffeine and barbecued meats we’ve been foisting on you, today we present the best pre-work and lunchtime health and beauty kicks.

You’re welcome.

ROCKFACE

When it comes to exercise, the principle of specificity dictates that training should be appropriate to the specific sport an individual wants to prepare for.

If your sport is climbing the corporate ladder, then what type of training could be more appropriate than indoor rock climbing?

Rockface in Northbridge bills itself as the largest climbing gym in WA, with a variety of difficulty levels on walls that reach 10m high.

THE YOGA VINE

In 2012, Occupational Medicine, an international peer-reviewed journal, published the results of British research into the effectiveness of yoga in reducing perceived stress and back pain in the workplace.

The study recruited local government workers and put them through an eight-week program, with one 50-minute yoga session a week.

“Participants reported less perceived stress, reduced back pain, more serenity and improved self-assuredness,” the researchers concluded.

With the “why” resolved, all you need is the “who”, “where” and “when”, which comes in the form of this boutique yoga studio in Ashton Chambers on St Georges Terrace.

As reported in The West’s Mind + Body liftout this week, The Yoga Vine has operated from pop-up venues in the past but these new digs represent a permanent push into the CBD’s health and fitness market.

They offer a lunch-hour express class every day.

BOX & BIKE

This 45-minute, high intensity workout at Queen Street Gym combines the upper body movement of a boxing class with the lower body burn that comes with a spin bike session.

No, you don’t punch into focus mitts while cycling, you alternate between each discipline for seven or eight two-minute “rounds”.

We haven’t done it personally — we had our hands full this week with the aforementioned burgers and banh mis — but we have it on the good authority of a gym rat that Box & Bike brings on a more profuse sweat than the annual performance review with the boss.

Sessions run before, during or after work and your trial workout is free.

GUYS GROOMING

When we promised a beauty tip, bet you thought it would be some kind of hot-rock, mud-wrapped treatment for women who can balance cucumber slices on their eyelids for an hour. Wrong.

Blokes need beauty tips, too, and we hear Guys Grooming on Hay Street is it.

Co-founder Leycester Cory said it was not unusual for his clients to spend their lunch hour in the salon getting a haircut or massage.

The more adventurous opt for waxing various parts of their anatomy. We won’t go into details except to say, “ouch”.
